DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class clearly and accurately interprets spoken and written language and translates between English and another language while maintaining full message content and context.  Responsibility is included for the production of written translations of official documents.  The employee may be required to operate a variety of interpreting equipment.  Work is performed under general supervision.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Interprets spoken passages from one language to another for meetings or other routine matters;

            Sight interprets documents written in one language to another language that is spoken;

            Proofreads, edits, and revises written materials;

            Writes or rewrites documents translating from one language to another while utilizing correct grammar, punctuation and spelling;

            Assists the public in completing forms;

            Delivers presentations to non-English speaking groups;

            May perform clerical work specifically related to translation/interpreting duties.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to read, write, and speak English and one or more languages; ability to interpret/translate from one language to another.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in interpreting/translating, both orally and in writing, between English and at least one other language.

 

NOTE:  Completion of an interpreter/translator program may be substituted for the above experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must demonstrate language proficiency at a level deemed appropriate by the employing agency.

 

Depending on the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
