DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in reviewing, processing and maintaining liability files relating to automotive, general, personal injury and medical malpractice liability claims.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Liability Claims Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over a clerical support staff.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Verifies  billing and processes liability claims for payment;

          Maintains liability claim ledgers and provides necessary documentation for the development of budget forecasts;

          Assists with preparation of cases to be presented to the Suffolk County Legislature's Finance Committee with recommendations for settlements greater than $25,000;

          Assists with management of liability claims files and with coordination of work with the County Attorney's Tort Unit;

          Maintains contact with claimants, does background research on validity of claims and coordinates process with affected County Departments;

          Provides information on liability claims procedures to County Departments, consultants, investigators, claimants, doctors, appraisers and attorneys;

          Makes recommendations on claim issues and settlements;

          Organizes and supervises the work of a clerical staff which processes claims.

         

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the processing and maintaining of liability  claims; working knowledge of the types, advantages and disadvantages of all types of insurance policies and coverage; working knowledge of automobile insurance plans including vehicle identification and the cost of repair or replacement of automobiles; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports; ability to supervise  a clerical support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all people involved in the liability claims process; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and one (1) year of supervisory experience in an insurance agency in sales and/or liability claims processing.

 

NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four (4) years.
