FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class reviews, processes and
maintains liability claim files to include automotive and general liability. The incumbent advises and recommends
insurance levels for all areas of liability claims. Work is performed
independently under the direction of an administrative supervisor. Supervision
is exercised over a support staff. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Reviews, processes and maintains liability claim files to
include automotive and general liability;
Negotiates and coordinates with
attorneys for claim settlements;
Authorizes claim settlements for
less than $10,000.00;
Recommends settlement levels of
greater than $10,000.00;
Prepares reviews for presentation to
the Suffolk County Legislature's Finance Committee on cases recommended for
settlements greater than $25,000.00;
Initiates subrogation activity on
all liability claims where the
County could offset its loss against another party;
Coordinates and follows up with an
Insurance Contract Analyst and the County Attorney Torts Unit to insure that
the process of recovery is being made;
Advises and recommends insurance
levels for all areas of liability claims to administrative supervisors;
Assists in procuring excess
insurance coverage for the County.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the processing and maintaining of
liability claims; good knowledge of the types, advantages and disadvantages of
all types of insurance policies and coverage; good knowledge of automobile
insurance plans including vehicle identification and the cost of repair or
replacement of automobiles; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare
clear and concise reports; ability to analyze statistical and factual data, and
to arrive at sound conclusions; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with employees; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree, and four (4) years of experience in the administration,
investigation or analysis of liability insurance claims, two (2) years of which
have been supervisory experience; or
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8)
years of experience the administration, investigation or analysis of liability
insurance claims, two (2) years of which have been supervisory experience; or
c) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b) except that no
substitution is allowed for the two (2) years of supervisory experience.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year of permanent
competitive status as a Senior Insurance Contract Analyst; or
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as a Liability Claims Examiner.
