DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs public information work , transmitting information to the media and/or the public on activities and services under the auspices of the agency.  Responsibility may also be included for receiving and handling complaints from the public.  The incumbent is expected to use some judgement and initiative in performing duties.  The work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior and is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Answers inquiries, provides information, and clarifies the intentions and status of projects and services for the general public;

            Writes or assists in writing press releases on programs and activities;

            Writes proclamations in honor of outstanding institutions, organizations and enterprises in recognition of special accomplishments and occasions;

            Writes captions for official local government photographs;

            Implements arrangements for participation in various exhibits, displays, radio taping and photographs;

            Receives complaints and maintains records regarding action taken;

            May investigate complaints and, where necessary, initiates action to solve problems;

            Prepares and maintains statistical records and prepares drafts;

            May speak at community meetings and gatherings.

Ability to learn the principles and techniques of advertising and public relations; ability to write clear, concise and interesting public information material; ability to learn the services and activities performed by the office; ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgement in arriving at conclusions; ability to handle inquiries efficiently and refer callers to other offices according to their requirements; ability to compile and interpret charts and graphs; ability to assist in the organizing, planning and directing of promotional campaigns; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; empathy in listening to the public's complaints and the ability to solve problems in the best interest of both parties; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

          (a) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience that regularly involved writing or editing responsibilities in the fields of journalism, marketing, managerial sales or public relations; or,

 

            (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience that regularly involved writing or editing responsibilities in the fields of journalism, marketing, managerial sales or public relations; or,

 

            (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Community Relations Assistant or Community Relations Assistant (Spanish Speaking).
