DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for administering a public relations program for a department or agency.  Respon­sibilities include researching, writing literature, receiving and responding to public inquiries and speaking on behalf of the department.  This position performs less difficult assignments and tasks than that of Public Relations Director.  The employee exercises a moderate amount of independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties.  Assignments are received from an administrative supervisor and work is reviewed through conferences and written reports.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Coordinates the research and production of various public information functions to advance public knowledge of a department or agency;

          Develops and writes various booklets, pamphlets and brochures to stimulate a greater public awareness of an agency's services and purpose;

          Attends and addresses meetings conducted by clubs, civil groups and government officials concerned with the work of the Department;

          Assesses public reaction to the policies, services and activities of the department and responds orally and in writing to public inquiries;

          Maintains close contact with others in public relations areas to further promote the work of the department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERITICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices involved in the field of public relations, advertising and journalism; ability to ac­quire a good knowledge of the programs and services conducted by the department; ability to develop the most effective approaches to the unique problems of a public service organization; ability to prepare literature which promotes a favorable image of the agency; ability to assign, supervise and review the work of a small group of clerical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Advertising or related field and two (2) years of ex­perience that regularly involved writing or editing responsibilities in the fields of journalism, marketing, managerial sales or public relations; or,

 

          (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school and six (6) years of exper­ience that regularly involved writing or editing responsibilities in the fields of journalism, marketing, managerial sales or public relations; or,

 

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by (a) and (b).

         

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Community Relations Assistant or Community Relations Assistant (Spanish Speaking).
