DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class develops and monitors programs designed to promote the growth of technical industries in the County.  Responsibility is also included for marketing technical industries to other regions including international markets.  Work is performed under the supervision of the department head and is reviewed through reports and conferences.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Develops and monitors programs designed to hasten the growth of technical firms, such as those involved in computer technology or medical research and development;

            Develops links between the region's industries and technical educational resources;

            Markets technical industries to other regions;

            Acts as departmental ombudsman for technical industries in the County;

            Conducts studies to assess the potential for the attraction of various industries;

            Meets with representatives of industry to inform them of the advantages of locating in this area.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the land, labor and financial resources of the area and their value to technical industries; thorough knowledge of the technical educational resources available; thorough knowledge of the current economy and its future outlook; thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the promotion of the development and relocation of technical industries; ability to develop and maintain good relations with public officials, the business community and the general public; ability to develop programs to meet the varied needs of different industries; ability to prepare clear comprehensive reports and promotional presentations; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered university with a Bachelor's Degree and four years of experience in economic development or area development, which must include experience within a technically oriented field, such as medical research and development, computer technology, or engineering.

 

NOTE:  Additional relevant education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
