DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists the
director of a County or town industrial development agency in gathering and preparing
data on the available plants, labor and transportation facilities, utilities,
and financial and other community resources which would be of interest to
industries considering locating in the community. The work includes frequent contacts with planning boards, banks,
utilities, and other private and public organizations involved in compiling
data on community resources. The
incumbent is required to attend meetings with representatives of industry to
explain in detail information relevant to making a decision on locating within
the jurisdiction. Work is performed
under the supervision of the department head and is reviewed through reports
and conferences. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in developing
programs to increase industrial, commercial and service enterprises in the
County or town, and assists new businesses in resolving problems;
Establishes and maintains
contacts with private and public agencies to stay informed on new programs
which may have an effect on commercial expansion;
Meets with
representatives of industry to inform them of the advantages of locating in
this area;
May supervise a staff in
establishing programs to solicit, develop and promote industry and provide
technical services;
May attend meetings of
business and civic groups to stay informed of their activities and attitudes,
and relate them to the programs of the department.

Thorough knowledge of the role and responsibility of government in
development of the economy; thorough knowledge of the current economy and its
future outlook; thorough knowledge of the land, labor and financial resources
of the area and their value to business and industry; thorough knowledge of
effective public relations principles and techniques; ability to develop and
maintain good relations with public officials, the business community and the
general public; ability to supervise the work of others in a manner conducive
to full performance and high morale; ability to prepare clear, comprehensive
reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or
university with a Master's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in
advertising, marketing, finance, area development or business management; or,
(b) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree, and four (4) years of experience in advertising, marketing, finance,
area development or business management; or,
(c) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and eight (8) years
of experience in advertising, marketing, finance, area development or business
management; or,
(d) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a),(b) and
(c).
