DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and
reviewing all mechanical and electrical engineering activities related to
energy conservation for Suffolk County buildings and sewerage facilities. The
incumbent determines and establishes administrative and technical policies for
the development, analysis and evaluation of energy conservation projects with
respect to their feasibility, cost, economic justification, public necessity
and convenience. Work is reviewed by the
Chief Engineer (Facilities) through discussions and inspections of submitted
designs or plans. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Explores the
practicality of emerging technology to mitigate operating budget increases;
Recommends energy
efficient improvements in all major building renovations and prepares energy
efficient designs as required;
Implements random
energy projects;
Performs energy audits
of County facilities;
Oversees programs to
reduce electrical and thermal energy’s use at County facilities;
Provides for continued
monitoring of energy performance of County facilities;
Recommends pilot
energy benchmarking programs at selected County facilities;
Assists Suffolk County
in developing energy conservation measures and recommendations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, and practices
of energy conservation; thorough knowledge of complex plumbing, heating,
ventilating and air conditioning systems; thorough knowledge of modern
engineering conservation methods and materials pertaining to maintenance and
repairs of mechanical systems; thorough knowledge of the applicable laws and
regulatory codes relevant to design, construction and operation of mechanical
systems; good knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources
of information regarding building mechanical design and construction; ability
to plan, schedule, coordinate and review the work of other engineers and technical
assistants in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability
to plan, design and prepare complete engineering plans and specifications;
ability to prepare comprehensive design programs and technical reports;
physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, and
seven (7) years experience in the design and/or installation of electrical,
plant or mechanical systems, four (4) years of which must have been as a
Licensed Professional Engineer performing energy engineering work.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, the
candidate must possess a Professional Engineer's License issued by the State of
New York.
