ASSISTANT ELECTRICAL ENGINEER

An employee in this class receives assignments requiring
the application of engineering skills and knowledge to electrical engineering
projects in connection with the design, construction, inspection or maintenance
of public works. Assignments are
received with general instructions, but employees are expected to use
initiative and judgment in carrying them out to completion. Supervision may be exercised over technical
assistants in any phase of the work.
Work is checked and reviewed frequently throughout its progress, and
completely at its conclusion, by professional supervisors. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs
sub-professional electrical engineering work in the preparation of plans and
design of buildings and other structures;
Prepares
engineering estimates of quantities of materials required for proposed public
works improvements;
Prepares
cost estimates of engineering materials;
Acts as resident electrical engineer on
construction projects;
Supervises the inspection of all phases
of work for compliance with County specifications;
Prepares estimates and submits
recommendations on amount of money due electrical contractors each month;
Prepares preliminary plans and layouts of
additions to, or replacements of, existing electrical equipment;
Makes load studies of County
installations to estimate future additions of electrical services;
Receives reports of faulty operation of
electrical equipment and applies necessary corrective measures to secure proper
operation;
Complies and keeps up-to-date the
electrical drawings, specifications and instructions for all County electrical
equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of construction specifications and of
their application to public works; thorough knowledge of the principles,
practices and instruments used in engineering drafting; through knowledge of
mathematics and application to electrical engineering computation; good
knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering; skill in
the use of engineering instruments and equipment; ability to perform difficult
technical computations to make estimates and tests, and to compile engineering
data and statistics; ability to make difficult and technical engineering
drawings; ability to write technical engineering specifications; ability to
read and interpret construction plans and gain compliance with specifications
in a tactful and impartial manner; ability to supervise assistants in a manner
conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with contractors and the general
public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open Competitive
Either:
a) Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical
Engineering, and two (2) years of experience in design and/or installation of
electrical systems and equipment; or
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in design and/or
installation of electrical systems and equipment; or
c) An
equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of
a) and b).
