DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class receives assignments requiring
the application of engineering skills and knowledge to mechanical engineering
projects in connection with the investigation, design, construction, alteration
and maintenance of plumbing, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other
mechanical equipment in County facilities. Assignments are received with
general instructions, but employees are expected to use initiative and judgment
in carrying them out to completion. Supervision may be exercised over technical
assistants in any phase of the work. Work is reviewed through frequent
conferences and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in the preparation of plans,
specifications and estimates for the construction or alteration of plumbing,
heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in County facilities;
Assists in the review of the plans,
specifications and estimates of the mechanical systems prepared by consulting
engineers;
Inspects work being performed by
contractors or County personnel on the alteration, construction and maintenance
of plumbing, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other mechanical
equipment in County facilities and recommends revision or acceptance of the
work;
Performs field surveys of existing
mechanical equipment for the use in alteration and construction planning or for
the use in preparation of maintenance procedures.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices used in building
construction; thorough knowledge of applicable rules and regulatory codes
relevant to the alteration and construction of plumbing, heating, ventilating
or air conditioning systems in facilities; good knowledge of construction plans
and specifications for plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning
systems in facilities; ability to perform difficult technical computations;
ability to make difficult technical drawings; ability to read and interpret
construction plans; ability to establish and maintain effective working
conditions with others; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, and two (2) years of
experience in the design and/or installation of mechanical systems and
equipment; or
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6)
years of experience in the design and/or installation of mechanical systems and
equipment; or
c) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
