FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
direct supervision, an employee in this class receives
assignments requiring the application of engineering skills and knowledge to
mechanical engineering projects in connection with the design, construction,
inspection or maintenance of public works projects. The employee receives
assignments with specific instructions and specific deadlines, and carries them
out to completion. Supervision may be exercised over technical
assistants in any phase of the work. Work is performed under a professional
supervisor who assigns, inspects and reviews work frequently throughout its
progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in the preparation of plans,
specifications and estimates for the construction or alteration of plumbing,
heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in County facilities;
Assists in the review of the plans,
specifications and estimates of the mechanical systems prepared by consulting
engineers;
Inspects work being performed by
contractors or County personnel on the alteration, construction and maintenance
of plumbing, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other mechanical
equipment in County facilities and recommends revision or acceptance of the
work;
Performs field surveys of existing
mechanical equipment for the use in alteration and construction planning or for
the use in preparation of maintenance procedures;
Utilizes AutoCAD drafting software
and add-on software packages.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices used in building design
and construction;
some
knowledge of construction plans and specifications for plumbing, heating,
ventilating and air conditioning systems in facilities; some knowledge of
applicable rules and regulatory codes relevant to the alteration and
construction of plumbing, heating, ventilating or air conditioning systems in
facilities; ability to perform simple engineering computations; ability to create
simple technical drawings and written specifications; ability to read and
interpret simple construction plans and written specifications; ability to
supervise technical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology,
Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology
or Construction Management Engineering Technology; or
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4)
years of experience in the design and/or installation of mechanical systems and
equipment; or
c) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
