MECHANICAL
ENGINEER 1037
Under
general supervision, an employee in this class receives assignments requiring
the application of professional engineering skills and knowledge to mechanical
engineering projects in connection with the construction, alteration or
reconstruction of public works projects. The employee receives assignments with
general instructions and specific deadlines but uses their own initiative and judgment
in carrying them out to completion. Supervision may be exercised over technical
assistants in any phase of the work.
Work
is performed under a professional supervisor who checks and reviews work
through conferences while in progress, and completely at its conclusion. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Participates in the preparation and
design of systems, plans, cost estimates and contract specifications for the
construction, reconstruction or alteration of plumbing, heating, ventilating or
air conditioning systems in County facilities;
Participates in the review of plans,
estimates, and specifications of the systems prepared by consulting engineers;
Inspects work being performed by
contractors or County personnel on the alteration, construction, and
maintenance of plumbing, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other
mechanical equipment in County facilities and recommends revision or acceptance
of the work;
Assists in the preparation of
reports regarding new projects and procedures in the field of mechanical or
electrical engineering;
May prepare Requests for Proposals
for solicitation of consulting firms for public work;
Utilizes AutoCAD drafting software
and add-on software packages.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices used in building design
and construction; good knowledge of construction plans and specifications for
plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in facilities; good
knowledge of applicable rules and regulatory codes relevant to the alteration
and construction of plumbing, heating, ventilating or air conditioning systems
in facilities; some knowledge of construction estimating, including the
relative cost and useful life of materials; ability to perform complex engineering
computations and to make recommendations on mechanical engineering problems; ability
to create complex technical drawings and written specifications; ability to
read and interpret complex construction plans and written specifications; ability
to supervise mechanical engineering projects in the field or office, and to
obtain adherence to plans and specifications; ability to supervise the work of
technical and clerical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in
Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical
Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or Nuclear Engineering and
possession of a New York State Professional Engineering license and current
registration; or
b) Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession
of a New York State Professional Engineering license and current registration supplemented
by twelve (12) years of mechanical, electrical or nuclear engineering
experience as set forth by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as
part of their Professional Engineer application.
Promotional
Possession
of a New York State Professional Engineering license, and two (2) years of
permanent competitive status as an Assistant Mechanical Engineer or Assistant
Electrical Engineer.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Throughout employment in this title,
the employee must maintain a current Professional Engineer’s License issued by
New York State.
