DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE
CLASS
Under direction, an employee in
this class is responsible for assisting in the planning, organization and
direction of the engineering functions of a town engineering department. The incumbent checks plans submitted by
private contractors to assure adherence to town regulations, and prepares plans
for proposed town construction projects.
Supervision is exercised over all drafting personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Examines
sub-division plans in order to check drainage, road profiles and regrading;
prepares performance bond estimates covering work of public improvement in
sub-divisions; reviews all parts of sub-division plans for conformity with town
regulations;
Plots
maps and plans from survey information;
Computes
and executes maps for right-of-way taking;
Prepares
plans and specifications for engineering contracts such as new parks, comfort
buildings, storage houses, roads and beach improvements;
Assists
the Town Engineer in preparing proposed engineering projects for submission to
the Town Board.

Thorough knowledge of the
principles and practices of civil engineering; thorough knowledge of
engineering practices and procedures as they apply to public works; good
knowledge of laws and other regulatory enactments controlling public works;
good knowledge of the developments of current literature and sources of
information in public works engineering; good knowledge of modern office
administration; ability to supervise the work of drafting personnel to attain
optimum work output; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.

the time of appointment, candidates must possess a Professional Engineer's
License issued by New York State, and maintain such license during employment
in this title.
