INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN TRAINEE 1071
DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class receives
training while assisting professional supervisors and construction
representatives in the repair and maintenance of instrumentation and motor
control systems requiring the application of electrical and mechanical
technology. The duration of the probation
period is anywhere from one year to a maximum of two years, during which time
the incumbent is required to satisfactorily complete a supervised in-service
training program. Upon successful
completion of the program, an employee with continuous service as a permanent
competitive Instrumentation Technician Trainee achieves permanent competitive
status as an Instrumentation Technician without further examination. Areas of
training include:

Basic electronics

Electrical
instrumentation maintenance

Fundamentals of
digital logic
(5)
Digital systems
maintenance
(6)
Variable
(proportioning) controllers
As experience is
gained and training is successfully completed, the incumbent will perform
duties with greater independence. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Maintains and repairs such instruments as magnetic flow
meters, ultrasonic generators, differential pressure transmitters, rotometers,
liquid level indicating systems, mag-flow converters, adder-subtractors,
square-root extractor totalizers, recorders and controllers.
Makes
checks and tests on the above instrumentation to assure proper functioning;
Utilizes such equipment as
multimeters, chlorine residual analyzers, precision potentiometers, voltmeters,
and amperometric titrators, oscilloscopes, signal generators and frequency
counters;
Utilizes common hand tools used in
electrical and plumbing work;
Assists in the operation and
maintenance of high voltage switchgear, including LIPA tie substation and gas
turbine emergency generator transfer switch gear;
Repairs automatic motor control
circuits associated with process and HVAC equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of electrical and mechanical principles
and practices as they relate to instrumentation; good knowledge of the use of
electrical tools and testing instruments; good knowledge of plumbing as it
relates to types of pipe, pipe cutting, threading and soldering, and jointing;
some knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, elementary chemistry, algebra and
basic physics; ability to interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams,
construction drawings and blueprints; ability to learn instrumentation repair
and maintenance; ability to follow complex oral and written instructions;
ability to keep simple and accurate reports; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an
Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology or a related field, and one (1)
year of experience in the installation, repair, maintenance or troubleshooting
of electronic, electro-mechanical or electrical monitoring equipment; or,
(b) Graduation from a standard
senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and
three (3) years of experience as described above; or,
(c)
Seven (7) years of experience as described above.
