DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
directs and supervises the calibration, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance
of process instrumentation, final control elements, control relays, alarm
circuits, high voltage distribution and electrical systems of sewage treatment
facilities. Supervision is exercised
over Instrumentation Technicians and other personnel engaged in electrical
maintenance and repair. Supervision is
received from a maintenance supervisor through reports and observation of work
in progress or completed. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Coordinates the operation of and maintenance of
instrumentation systems;
Evaluates bid proposals regarding
instrumentation, telecommunications and electrical services; make
recommendations based on cost/benefit ratios and priority needs;
Designs, implements and inspects
modifications of instrumentation and motor control systems;
Directs the inspection of all phases
of work performed by service contract personnel;
Reviews change orders to determine
necessity and intent; directs implementation of pending change orders to insure
compliance with original intent;
Attends conferences with consulting
engineers and project managers to identify problems and formulate solutions for
construction projects;
Instructs operations personnel in the
proper use of instrumentation and control systems, including electrical
distribution, motor control and meters.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of electrical and mechanical
principles and practices as they relate to instrumentation systems; thorough
knowledge of the use of electrical tools and testing instruments; thorough
knowledge of the design of instrumentation and motor control systems; thorough
knowledge of plumbing as it relates to types of pipe, pipe cutting, threading,
soldering and jointing; thorough knowledge of instrumentation repair and
maintenance; good knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, chemistry, algebra and
basic physics; skill in the use of electrical tools and testing instruments;
ability to read and interpret complex oral and written instructions; ability to
prepare accurate reports; ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive
to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with contractors and consultants; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology or a
related field, and five (5) years of experience in the installation, repair or
maintenance of electronic, electromechanical or electrical monitoring
equipment.
NOTE: Additional
experience in the above-mentioned fields will be substituted for the above-required
education on a year-for-year basis.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an
Instrumentation Technician.
