COMPUTER GRAPHICS MAPPING SPECIALIST 1107
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class uses computer graphics equipment in the
performance of difficult and varied map drafting tasks. This position differs
from those in the Map Drafter series in that the emphasis is on the application
of computer technology to mapping projects, rather than on the mechanical
aspects of map drafting. Performance is evaluated through review of finished
work and by consultation and periodic conferences. The incumbent may train
employees in the use of the equipment and may supervise those involved in
routine applications thereof. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Analyzes mapping information from various
sources to determine applicability of
computer graphics to a project;
Selects from the computer's menu and
keys in the appropriate instructions necessary to accomplish a specific mapping
tasks;
Encodes mapping information into usable
computer data through the use of trigonometry and analytic geometry to arrive
at an accurate map rendering;
Produces a whole map from sections
drawn in different scales by digitizing the sections and keying in computer
instructions;
Operates a pen plotter to perform
map-printing functions;
Compares contractors' maps with
official records, and, using the computer, analyzes results and discusses
disparities with supervisor;
Creates permanent records by reading
and writing data to and from magnetic tape and/or disk;
May recommend software improvements to
supervisor;
Discusses mapping problems with County
departments, local jurisdictions, surveyors, title companies and taxpayers;
May instruct others in the use of
computer graphics equipment.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles and techniques of computer graphics operations as
applied to mapping; good knowledge of the principles and practices of may
drafting; good knowledge of trigonometry and analytic geometry; ability to read
and interpret maps, charts, plans and survey notes; ability to think in
abstract terms and apply such reasoning to the operation of computer graphics
equipment; ability to follow complex written instructions and procedures; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Three (3) years of drafting experience,
two (2) years of which must have been in computer-operated map drafting.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as a Map Drafter I or Drafter II.
