INFORMATION SYSTEMS COORDINATOR 1109
An employee in this
class oversees the operation of the Countywide Geographic Information System, which
includes responsibilities for planning, organizing, and coordinating work
activities relating to the administration of a Geographical Information System
(GIS), and exchanging information with Information Services. The incumbent oversees GIS hardware and
software upgrades and tracks the progress of GIS programs. A considerable amount of independent judgment
and initiative is required. Work is
performed under the general direction of an Assistant Manager of Data
Processing or other administrative supervisor and is reviewed through
consultation, conferences and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Researches,
analyzes, develops and maintains an organization wide GIS system;
Develops
and maintains standards for all GIS applications;
Coordinates
GIS data with departments and the County Information Services division in order
to facilitate the sharing of information as necessary;
Responds
to requests for special information from the GIS system;
Prepares
GIS division budget and oversees the budget used for training, equipment, stock
supplies and upgrades, approves necessary purchases;
Prepares
reports to determine the effectiveness and/or efficiency of current GIS
infrastructure and related technologies;
Researches
and implements new GIS technologies to continue the advancement of existing
systems;
Manages
GIS vendor contacts and meets with vendors to discuss the purchase and
implementation of GIS software and hardware;
Develops,
designs, and coordinates training classes;
Represents
Suffolk County government on committees that address GIS issues;
Serves
as liaison for GIS functions with other departments and agencies;
Makes
presentations to the public, civic groups and other organizations.

Comprehensive knowledge of GIS
principles and practices; thorough knowledge of automated mapping and spatial
information processing methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of relevant
GIS software and hardware; knowledge of program budgeting and contract
management; ability to translate technical concepts and terminology in terms
understandable to individuals with differing levels of computer expertise;
ability to effectively plan, organize and direct the work activities of
personnel; ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion; ability to
respond quickly and effectively when emergency situations arise; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees of
different departments, government officials and the public; ability to plan,
assign, supervise and evaluate the work of others in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely,
both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
(a)
Graduation from a
college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with
a Master’s Degree, and four (4) years of experience in geographic information
system design and implementation, at least two (2) years of which must have
been in a supervisory capacity; or,
(b)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Bachelor’s Degree, and six (6) years of
experience in geographic information system design and implementation, at least
three (3) of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Geographic Information Systems
Technician IV.
At the time of appointment and during
employment in this title, employees will be required to posses a valid license
to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
