DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for laying out, supervising and participating in the preparation of architectural drawings.  Work involves translating from rough sketches to scale drawings, preparing cost and material estimates and renderings of proposed projects.  The work differs from that of an Architectural Drafter II in that the incumbent is expected to perform the work with a minimum of supervision and to be able to assume responsibility for technical decisions.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a professional supervisor and is reviewed for adherence to procedures and accuracy.  Supervision is exercised over technical personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises and participates in the preparation of drawings, plans and designs of building projects;

          Utilizes AUTO CAD software;

          Prepares intermediate and final drawings from rough sketches and specifications;

          Exercises supervision over technical personnel;

          Plans and reviews work of Drafter Is and Drafter IIs;

          Checks shop drawings for accuracy and continuity;

          Confers with architects on current and proposed projects;

          Coordinates requests for architectural adjustments and additions to existing structures;

          Recommends alternative plans when requested alterations are not feasible.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of architectural drawing; good knowledge of building materials and the techniques of design and construction; good knowledge of mathematics; skill in the use of drafting instruments and equipment; skill in the use of AUTO CAD software; ability to perform difficult computations, to make material and cost estimates, and to compile data and statistics; ability to plan, supervise and review the work of a staff of drafters in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to prepare oral and written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Completion of sixty (60) credit hours toward a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and four (4) years experience as an architectural drafter; or,

 

          (b) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Applied Science with a major in Drafting and four (4) years experience as an architectural drafter; or,

 

          (c) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience as an architectural drafter; or,

 

          (d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the  limits of (a), (b) and (c).

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Architectural Drafter II.
