DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for drafting structural plans from rough sketches, making cost and material estimates and preparing presentations of highway, bridge and waterway projects.  Work involves knowledge of civil engineering theory, mathematics and drafting techniques.  Assignments are received from supervisors on the engineering staff and are reviewed upon completion to assure their proper execution.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Makes working drawings and prepares contract plans from preliminary drawings and sketches;

Details assigned portions of bridges, structures, bulkheads, retaining walls, etc.

Revises drawings and working plans;

Makes estimates of quantities and prepares cost estimates of structures and structural parts;

Reviews plans and specifications;

Confers with engineers on current and proposed projects;

Supervises the work of Engineering Aides and Drafters;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of engineering drawings and structural drafting; some knowledge of stress analysis, resistance of materials, mechanics and simple structural design; some knowledge of geometry and trigonometry; ability to accurately perform the computations required to carry out the detailing or drafting work assigned; ability to turn out finished drawings and plans from rough sketches accompanying a design or from written directives; ability to supervise and direct the work of technical personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to understand and translate oral written directives; ability to prepare oral and written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

           OPEN COMPETITIVE  

         Either:

a)    Completion of sixty (60) credit hours toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university and three (3) years of experience in structural drafting; or,

b)    Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Drafting and three (3) years of experience in structural drafting; or,

c)    An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
