DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises and partic­ipates in the work of preparing graphics for a planning department or agency. The incumbent is responsible for planning research, and for technical training and supervision of a drafting staff.  Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through review of work completed and through oral and written re­ports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Oversees the submission of graphics to the department director or others;

          Coordinates projects requiring graphics and issues reports on such projects to the department director and others;

          Trains and supervises all drafting personnel; directs or prepares all drafting studies done in conjunction with subdivisions, site plans and zoning changes;

          Designs business cards, brochures, directories, letterheads and presenta­tion graphics as directed;

          Researches history of any parcel submitted for subdivision or zone change; researches and updates special maps, such as street and highway, zoning, school and recreation maps.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures of drafting; thorough knowledge of the methods, techniques and materials used in graphic illustration; skill in the use of drafting, illustrating and lettering instru­ments and materials; ability to understand and evaluate data and arrive at accurate conclusions; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of paid experience including at least three (3) years as an artist or illustrator, and one (1) year as a draft­er.  The above experience must include one (1) year of experience in the area of urban planning, zoning or a related field.

 

NOTE:  Additional education beyond high school in the fields of graphic arts, illustration or drafting form a New York State or regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for required experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.
