DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs skilled artistic and technical work in designing and preparing a variety of materials used to illustrate proposed projects. The incumbent exercises a high degree of artistic originality and independence. Supervision may be exercised over a small clerical staff. Supervision is received from an administrative superior through periodic review of completed work and of projects in progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Prepares
a variety of charts, graphs, pamphlets and other publications for reports and
projects;
Performs complex and
responsible art work as well as clerical tasks related to the final production
of various manuals, brochures, journals and other publications;
Designs and prepares
illustrative materials for inclusion in various presentations and exhibits;
Executes drawings and
other types of illustrations using pastel chalk, pencil, ink, scratchboard,
charcoal, and mechanical drawing techniques;
Adapts photographs for
copying and retouching;
Engages in planning and
design research;
Responsible for the
orderly storage and utilization of production materials and equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the methods, techniques, and materials used in effective
illustration; good knowledge of principles, methods and instruments of mechanical
drawing; skill in the use of illustrating and lettering instruments and
lettering equipment; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written
instructions; ability to utilize basic skills in many forms of artwork and
graphic design; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally
and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two
years of experience in art and illustration.
