DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs highly artistic and creative work in designing and preparing a variety of materials for presentation. The incumbent is expected to exercise a considerable amount of independence of judgment, initiative, and originality. The work of this class differs from that of Illustrator in that this position requires considerably more independence and superior artistry in the development of new programs and projects from concept through final production stages. Supervision may be exercised over a small clerical and/or technical staff, and is received from an administrative superior through periodic review of completed work and of projects in progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Creates,
designs, and prepares illustrative materials for presentation purposes;
Performs highly complex
and responsible art work such as brochures, pamphlets, posters, exhibits and
other publications;
Develops and prepares a
variety of visual aid materials;
Executes highly creative
drawings and other types of illustrations using pastel, chalk, pencil, ink,
scratchboard, charcoal, and mechanical drawing techniques;
Assists in the
development and presentation of materials for driver training, vendor selling,
and other traffic safety training programs;
Engages in planning and
design research.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Superior
knowledge of methods, techniques, and materials used in effective illustration;
good knowledge of the principles, methods and instruments of mechanical
drawing; superior skill in the use of illustrating and lettering instruments
and materials; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written
instructions; ability to utilize skills in many forms of artwork and graphic
design; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in
writing; ability to supervise and direct a small group of clerical and/or
technical subordinates; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
a) Graduation from high school or the
possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience
in art or illustration; or,
b) Three years of relevant education at a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university; or,
c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of a) and b); or,
d) One year of experience as an Illustrator.
