DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs technical duties encompassing preparation of composite sketches of suspects and scale models of crime scenes.  The incumbent meets with witnesses and victims to gather data for composite sketches of suspects.  Work is performed under the supervision of the commanding officer of the unit.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Interviews witnesses to obtain descriptions of suspects;

            Assesses creditability of witnesses to crime scenes;

            Formulates composite sketches of suspects;

            Conducts mug viewings of prior offenders for witnesses and victims, utilizing photographs and photographic slides;

            Reproduces color mug slides from other photographic sources, such as negatives and photographic prints;

            Maintains mug files;

            Draws descriptions of stolen articles;

            Creates scale models depicting crime scene locations for investigative and court presentation;

            Reconstructs facial features of deceased to obtain identification;

            Offers court testimony related to composite artist drawings and mug viewing identification;

            Maintains the Department’s video and photograph computer;

            May be required to use a comput-sketch machine.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of composite art procedures for preparing identification sketches; good knowledge of interviewing techniques; good knowledge of techniques employed in sketching the human face; knowledge of the function of composite art within the area of law enforcement; knowledge of photography and black and white darkroom procedures; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; ability to perform under stressful conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            (a) Graduation from a regionally credited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's Degree in Art; or,

 

            (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience as a commercial artist.
