DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class receives assignments requiring the application of architectural skills and knowledges in connection with proposed new projects or renovations of public buildings.  Assignments are received with general instructions, but the incumbent is expected to use initiative and judgment in carrying them out to completion.  Supervision may be exercised over drafters.  Work is checked and reviewed throughout its  progress and at its completion by professional supervisors.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Makes field inspections and site examinations; prepares preliminary design and structural layouts;

            Designs, lays out, writes specifications for and makes preliminary estimates on new construction or alterations of public buildings and other related public works projects;

            Checks shop drawings and coordinates mechanical drawings with related architectural drawings;

            Supervises building construction  projects.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of architecture; good knowledge of the   planning, design and construction of public buildings; good knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources of information in the field of architecture; good knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to the construction and renovation of buildings; ability to  plan, to design and to prepare architectural plans and specifications of moderate difficulty; ability to perform engineering computations and to make comprehensive recommendations on architectural problems; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the   position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Architectural Technology, and two (2) years of architectural experience; or,

           

            b)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Architecture or Architectural Technology, and four (4) years of architectural experience; or,

           

            c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
