FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in planning, organizing, reviewing and directing the architectural design and/or construction activities for County buildings and related projects. The incumbent implements administrative and technical policies and procedures for the development, analysis and evaluation of architectural projects with respect to their feasibility, cost, economic justification, public necessity and convenience. Supervision is exercised directly or indirectly over all employees working in the corresponding unit. Work is reviewed by the County Architect through discussions and inspections of submitted reports and plans. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans and supervises the work of
professional and sub-professional architects and engineers;
Assists the County Architect in
planning and directing the activities within the division, as well as
implementing both the technical and administrative policies and procedures
established by the County Architect;
Prepares programs for proposed
County buildings including cost estimates for design and construction;
Supervises the preparation of
working drawings and specifications required prior to receiving bids;
Reviews designs and plans submitted
by consulting architects and engineers;
Oversees the administration of
buildings and projects under construction;
Acts as a representative at meetings
with other County departments and agencies.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural planning, design and
construction; thorough knowledge of the laws and regulatory enactments
controlling building construction as applied to
public buildings and related projects; thorough knowledge of modern
building construction methods and materials; thorough knowledge of modern
developments, current literature, and sources of information in public works
architecture; thorough knowledge of modern office administration; ability to
plan and direct the work of architects, engineers, contractors and other
departmental personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; ability to perform engineering
computations and to prepare
comprehensive recommendations and reports on architectural problems affecting the County; ability to
plan, design and prepare working drawings and specifications; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New
York State with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, and four (4)
years of licensed professional architectural experience.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as an Architect.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates
must possess a professional architect's license issued by New York State at the
time of appointment, and maintain said license throughout employment in this
title.
