COUNTY
ARCHITECT 1149
An employee in this class has the responsibility for
planning, organizing, reviewing and directing all architectural and related
engineering activities for County buildings and related projects. The incumbent determines and establishes
administrative and technical policies and procedures for the development,
analysis and evaluation of architectural projects with respect to their
feasibility, cost, economic justification, public necessity and
convenience. Supervision is exercised
directly or indirectly over all departmental employees working in the unit or
division. Work is reviewed by the
Commissioner of Public Works through discussion and inspections of submitted
designs or plans. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
generally the overall preparation of designs, plans and specifications for all
construction projects; directs
preparation of standard procedures and
instructions in field operations; coordinates site work, mechanical, electrical
and structural engineering functions;
Acts as
liaison between the Commissioner and special architectural and/or engineering
consultants;
Acts as
consultant to other County departments in matters pertaining to architecture
and planning of public improvements;
Prepares
a variety of special reports pertaining to the design, construction and cost of
public building projects as directed by the Commissioner.

Comprehensive knowledge of architectural principles and
practices; comprehensive knowledge of modern building construction methods and
materials; thorough knowledge of law and regulatory enactments controlling
building construction as applied to public building and related projects;
thorough knowledge of modern development, current literature and sources of
information in public works architecture; thorough knowledge of modern office
administration; ability to plan and direct the work of architects, engineers,
contractors and other departmental
personnel in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale;
ability to prepare operating budgets and
to prepare comprehensive recommendations and reports on architectural
problems affecting the County; good judgment; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New
York State with a Bachelor's Degree in
Architecture or Architectural Technology, and six (6) years of licensed
professional architectural experience.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant County Architect.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Candidates must possess a professional architect's
license issued by New York State at the time of appointment, and maintain said
license throughout employment in this title.
