DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs assignments requiring the application of landscape architectural skills to the planning, design and development of public properties and parks.  Assignments received are general in nature, and the incumbent is expected to use independent initiative and judgment in completing them.  The incumbent may review work in progress to assure its adherence to specifications.  Supervision may be exercised over technical and clerical personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Evaluates and designs landscape projects for public properties and parks;

          Prepares preliminary site plans and landscape plans for potential park development;

          Prepares reports, recommendations and environmental impact statements on ongoing development projects;

          Inspects and reviews site plan projects in progress to insure adherence to specifications;

          May plan roads, walkways, parks, recreational equipment, parking areas and utilities relevant to a given park development projects;

          May act as a community liaison in describing and justifying landscape projects.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture, planning, design and construction; good knowledge of modern landscape construction methods and materials; good knowledge of modern developments and current sources of information in landscape architecture; working knowledge of the laws and codes applicable to landscape architecture; working knowledge of cost estimations for landscape architecture projects; skill in adapting natural surroundings to landscape architectural projects for maximum aesthetic affect with minimal adverse environmental impact; ability to plan and prepare landscape proposals; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Civil Engineering or a related field, and four (4) years of experience in land­scape architecture planning and design.
