DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing administrative and field duties involving the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive environmental education program for one or more park or location.  The employee in this class develops and presents environmental education programs to school groups, community organizations and the public.  Work is performed under the general direction of an environmental or administrative supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, consultations and the submission of required reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Develops presentations describing the ecological and environmental values of the resources contained at the sites and delivers them to school groups, community groups and visitors;

            Provides information to the public regarding park rules, regulations and procedures;

            Prepares a variety of reports regarding the environmental education presentations, the conservation projects, and any incidences or occurrences at the parks;

            Plans special events and displays;

            Drafts and prepares a variety of written material including articles, correspondence, and event flyers;

            Notifies the proper authorities in the event of an emergency situation;

            May enforce environmental codes and other park related regulations;

            May assist in searches for missing persons, children, etc. in parks and beaches;

            May direct traffic at park facility.

                       

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of environmental conservation and protection; thorough knowledge of recent developments, sources of information and available resources in the field of environmental protection and conservation; good knowledge of the various laws, rules, and regulations that apply to the protection of park resources and the visiting public; good knowledge of the natural sciences; ability to develop and conduct educational programs related to environmental protection or conservation; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare a variety of reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management/Protection or a related field; or,

 

            (b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with an Associate’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Management/Protection or a related field, and two years of related experience.
