DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under
direct supervision, an employee in this class assists in the collection of
samples for air or water pollution control programs. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of equipment,
making field measurements, drawing sketches and diagrams, collection of samples
and the tabulation of data. All work is
reviewed by supervisory personnel. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Maintains
air sampling network by changing filters and other apparatus which may include
minor repair of sampling equipment;
May operate small craft
during marine water sampling and assist environmentalists in their sampling
duties;
Samples surface waters
and groundwater as part of a routine surveillance program;
Measures water levels and
stream flows;
Assists in tabulating and
compiling data and making simple calculations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge
of principles of mathematics and natural sciences; some knowledge of air or
water sampling techniques; ability to establish and maintain good working
relationships with co-workers, business establishments, public officials and
the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both
orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's
degree, which must include twelve (12) credits in mathematics or a natural or
physical science; or,
(b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
and two (2) years of experience in environmental control activities; or,
(c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and
(b).
