RECYCLING OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1215
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class supervises and participates in the implementation of programs for
the collection, source separation and recycling of solid waste and the collection
and disposal of hazardous materials. The
incumbent is responsible for overseeing recycling facilities and household
hazardous materials drop-off centers. Supervision
may be exercised over technical, clerical and operational employees. Supervision is received from an administrative
or professional supervisor. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Oversees
one or more recycling facilities;
Oversees
the collection and disposal of hazardous waste at drop-off centers;
Supervises
employees working in recycling centers or hazardous materials drop-off centers;
Researches
new recycling possibilities;
Implements
Federal, State & local recycling mandates;
Interacts
with waste haulers and related service providers in scheduling removal of waste
material;
Implements
new Town recycling directives and initiatives;
Trains
staff in the handling of hazardous materials according to OSHA guidelines.
Oversees
operation and maintenance of Town organic garden.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge
of recycling techniques; thorough knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws
pertaining to source separation, recycling of solid waste, handling and removal
of hazardous materials, ability to investigate, analyze data and evaluate
alternatives; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability
to prepare reports; physical demands commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open
Competitive
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma and one (1) year of experience in environmental protection activities.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title employees must possess minimum of OSHA 40-Hour Hazwoper Certification in
accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.20.
