DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class aids in the planning, development and coordination of a recycling program of a town's solid waste management plan.  The incumbent will aid in drafting recycling proposals, analyzing recycling costs and drafting contracts.  Work is performed directly under the Assistant Recycling Coordinator or other administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Performs functions for the Recycling Coordinator which will aid in the planning, development and coordination of a recycling program for a town's Department of Waste Management, Division of Source Separation and Resource Recover;

            Aids in the formation or drafts of contracts with vendors;

            Aids in the development and coordination of recycling efforts with federal, state and local official bodies; and drafts specialized reports pursuant to recycling functions;

            Provides information to the general public, concerned community groups and aids in the coordination of efforts and activities of the Recycling Educator;

            Aids in the development and implementation of school and community recycling programs for business and commercial establishment programs;

            May draft recycling proposals;

            May analyze and maintain current information on recycling costs and marketability;

            May recommend utilization of town staff and/or contractors for the recycling process;

            May recommend the purchase of equipment to accomplish goals.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of recycling techniques; good knowledge of the markets for recyclables; some knowledge of recycling equipment; some knowledge of ecological concepts and the principles that govern good conservation techniques; some knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to recycling and solid waste; ability to analyze data and evaluate alternatives; ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively with colleagues, civic groups and government officials; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree; or,

 

            (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,and four (4) years of experience with the recycling of solid waste; or,

 

             (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
