DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is involved with planning, developing and presenting recycling programs to the public as part of a town's solid waste management plan.  Responsibilities include preparation of grant applications and publicizing recycling efforts to community residents, civic associations, local schools and business organizations.  Work requires expertise in community and legislative acumen, and is performed under the general direction of the department head.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans, develops, coordinates and represents a town in community activities to further the awareness and compliance in the town's recycling programs;

            Writes recycling proposals to further community and school participation and to encourage community interest and support;

            Writes grant applications for educational purposes;

            Represents a town at public meetings as a liaison from the department in matters related to sound environmental practices, particularly, but not limited to, the reuse, reduction and recycling of municipal solid wastes;

            Assists in the research and development of information regarding legislation pertinent to environmental control.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of communication techniques; thorough knowledge of the principles that govern good economics through conservation techniques; thorough knowledge of state and local governmental procedures pertaining to legislative actions; some knowledge of the modern developments, current literature available and sources of information pertaining to recycling activities; ability to establish and maintain public interest in recycling programs; ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, civic groups and government offices; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;  physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience as an educator or administrator within the academic or industrial training environment.
