DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class participates in the implementation of programs for the source separation and recycling of solid waste.  The incumbent is responsible for assisting in managing recycling centers, marketing recyclables and collect­ing data and analyzing alternatives in solid waste disposal.  Supervision is received from a professional or administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in the coordination of recycling and source separation efforts;

            Acts as an assistant manager of one or more recycling centers;

            Researches possible markets and monitors fluctuating prices of recyclables;

            Provides technical assistance in the collection, storage and sales of recyclables;

            Prepares technical reports on recycling and source separation;

            Assists in drafting ordinances on recycling and source separation;

            Maintains an information center of legal files, documents, reprints, books and slides;

            Provides technical assistance on recycling and source separation in re­sponse to requests from individuals and organizations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of recycling techniques; thorough knowledge of the markets for recyclables; good knowledge of recycling equipment; good knowledge of ecological concepts and the principles that govern good conservation tech­niques; good knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to source separation, recycling and solid waste; ability to analyze data and evaluate alternatives; ability to prepare technical reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensur­ate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree including a minimum of thirty (30) credit hours in mathematics, natural or physi­cal sciences, and two (2) years of experience in environmental protection activities; or,

 

            (b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or  possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in environmental protection activities; or,

 

            (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

NOTE:  Graduate education in mathematics, natural or physical sciences will be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.
