DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class is responsible for evaluating and preparing scientific
reports regarding environmental health issues, including the toxicity and
potential health impacts of environmental contaminants. The incumbent oversees the environmental
health risk assessment program in
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Prepares
in-depth toxicological reviews on chemicals that are found in the environment;
Interprets analytical results provided by the Public and Environmental Health Laboratory on groundwater, soil, soil gas, indoor air, and wildlife tissue monitoring in terms of health risks;
Acts
as environmental toxicology consultant to the departments of Economic
Development and Planning, Public Works, Law, and other county agencies;
Recommends
remedial actions to minimize public health risks;
Consults
and maintains liaison with other governmental agencies, public interest groups,
and educational institutions involved in the study of environmental health
impacts;
Visits sites to evaluate potential
exposure pathways to hazardous materials;
Supervises personnel involved in
toxicology and environmental health risk assessments;
Represents the Commissioner at various
public and governmental meetings and serves on numerous committees and task
forces as required.

Comprehensive knowledge of toxicology;
comprehensive knowledge of recent developments in health risk assessment and
the environment; good knowledge of the applicable Federal, State and municipal
laws and regulatory codes relevant to environmental health standards; good
knowledge of the methods and techniques used in obtaining and analyzing
chemicals found in the environment; ability to prepare clear, accurate and
comprehensive reports; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to direct activities of
professional, technical and clerical personnel in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with Federal, State, and local agencies and with the
general public; tact; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.

Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Master’s Degree in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, or a
related science, and four (4) years of experience in toxicology.
