DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An
employee in this class is expected to utilize a high degree of technical
knowledge, initiative, resourcefulness and judgment in carrying assignments to
completion, and may represent the Planning Department as an environmental
expert. Work involves responsibility for
the operation of all aspects of comprehensive environmental impact studies, as
well as the coordination and supervision of federal and state grant proposals. Supervision is exercised over professional,
technical and clerical personnel. Work
is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and written
reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans, organizes and directs the
activities of professional, technical and clerical personnel engaged in
compiling, analyzing and evaluating data related to comprehensive environmental
studies and analyses;
Performs professional and scientific
work in preparing and compiling reports and analyses of the environmental
impact of proposed projects on Suffolk County waterways, groundwaters and
wetlands and the general ecological results that may occur due to environmental
modifications;
Serves as project manager for
environmental studies supported by federal progress and final reports;
Supervises and coordinates the
preparation of material for public hearings and informational meetings.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of compiling and
organizing scientific data to determine the impact of alterations of the
environment; comprehensive knowledge of the methods and techniques used in
environmental analysis; comprehensive knowledge of the current principles,
practices, methods and techniques utilized in preserving and improving
environmental conditions; thorough knowledge of the applicable federal, state
and municipal laws and regulatory codes relevant to environmental conditions;
thorough knowledge of current literature and sources of information in the
field of environmental sciences; thorough knowledge of the technical
nomenclature peculiar to the environmental sciences; ability to develop
effective communications with other research groups and information sources;
ability to systematically analyze and solve problems; ability to plan,
supervise and review the work of professional and technical personnel in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express
oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a
Bachelor's Degree in mathematics, one of the natural or physical sciences,
environmental studies or a related field, plus eight (8) years of experience in
environmental studies, including environmental assessment of development projects,
or a related field, two (2) years of which have been in a responsible
supervisory capacity.
NOTE: Graduate education in one of the above areas
will be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two (2) years of the
above non-supervisory experience.
PROMOTIONAL
One (1) year of permanent
competitive status as a Principal Environmental Analyst.
