HYDROGEOLOGIST                                                            1231

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs complex scientific work in the study and evaluation of hydrologic and geologic matters. The incumbent conducts advanced studies of groundwater, surface water and mineral resources. Work differs from that performed by an Assistant Hydrogeologist in that it involves responsibility for development of methodologies, and is of a more complex and technical nature. Assignments are received with general instructions, but incumbents are expected to use considerable judgment and initiative. Supervision is exercised over a small professional staff. Performance is reviewed through conferences and reports. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Designs and supervises field data collection efforts, including geologic coring, pump test measurement water table measurement and groundwater pollution sampling;

            Develops methodologies for investigating the relationships between groundwater withdrawals and resultant changes in groundwater flow patterns and the location of the saltwater interface;

            Develops methodologies for investigating the relationship between land use activities and groundwater contamination;

            Designs and oversees use of computerized groundwater models;

            Provides technical input for use in groundwater policy development;

            Coordinates and implements cooperative program between Suffolk County and the United States Geological Survey.
