DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs professional scientific work related to the protection of the marine resources of the County.  Assignments are broad in scope with considerable opportunity for the use of independent thought, professional judgment, and for making technical decisions. Supervision is exercised over a small number of technical and clerical personnel.  Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Conducts and supervises research related to the marine environment.

            Supervises a unit dealing with marine resources.

            Assists in review and evaluation of plans and engineering reports in relation to their impact on the marine environment.

            Develops and supervises a monitoring program for the collection of data to be used in the analysis of short and long-term trends in the marine water quality.

            Assists in the preparation of grant proposals and requests for proposals.

            Communicates with governmental agencies, industry representatives, civic organizations and the general public on matters involving environmental quality.

            Maintains a working relationship with the regional scientific community.

            Prepares reports and provides expert testimony as required at legal proceedings.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of marine biology and associated scientific and engineering fields; good knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources of information applicable to the field of Marine Biology; ability to perform difficult scientific computations and to make recommendations on associated engineering problems; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in biology and six (6) years of professional experience in an area of marine biology.
