DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class assists in, or performs, surveys, investigations and field projects related to bay and shellfish research and management.  The incumbent performs entry-level professional duties.  Supervision is received from either a Bay Management Specialist II or a professional waterways management or environmental protection director.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in surveys which include the gathering of marine samples to study the growth and abundance of shellfish in the fishery;

            Assists in water quality testing programs to determine temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and other factors;

            Participates in field surveys of town wetlands as part of an overall salt marsh management plan;

            Assists in, and performs, laboratory work on collected samples such as water quality evaluation, invertebrate identification, hard clam larval identification counts and phytoplankton and zooplankton identification counts;

            May assist in programs of shellfish aquaculture, transplanting shellfish, spawner programs or the safeguarding of restricted areas;

            Compiles and assists in analyzing data regarding shellfish harvests, shellfish identification, larval counts and economic factors;

            Responds to complaints and inquiries about conditions which affect the wetlands and the bay;

            May assist in beach erosion monitoring, dune stabilization programs and wetlands permit reviews.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of bay resources management and research; good knowledge of the federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to wetlands, shellfish and local waterways; knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of compiling, organizing and interpreting scientific data; knowledge of the modern developments, current literature, sources of information and technical nomenclature in the field of bay management; knowledge of the natural and biological sciences as they relate to bay management; ability to compile data and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Microbiology or Invertebrate Zoology, and one (1) year of experience in bay management activities.

 

NOTE:   Additional relevant education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Must have ability to learn how to operate small boats.
