DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee of this class performs research on wild animals and their ectoparasites responsible for human or animal disease transmission.  Studies conducted include observation, collection of specimens, identification, appropriate control measures and recording and analyzing data.  Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through written material and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Identifies and evaluates different wildlife habitats;

            Studies wildlife ecology and behavioral biology;

            Collects wild animals, arthropod ectoparasites, biological samples and

prepares material for laboratory studies;

          Sorts and identifies material collected;            

             Complies and utilizes research data;

             Implements control programs to eliminate or reduce arthropod disease transmission to humans or other animals;

              Supervises field personnel and performs related work as required.

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of field instruments used for wildlife studies;  good knowledge of taxonomy of macroscopic fauna and flora of different wildlife habitats; knowledge of capture and release methodologies; knowledge of collecting biological samples and arthropod ectoparasites from wild animals; knowledge of the principles and practices of compiling, organizing, analyzing and utilizing scientific data; knowledge of statistical sampling methods as applied to wildlife environment; knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and regulations pertaining to wildlife management; ability to write informational materials; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor of Science Degree in wildlife management, zoology, ecology or related field.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Employees must obtain a New York State Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate within the first year of employment.  This certificate must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
