DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in the performance of professional cartographic work for planning projects and studies. Under the direction of the Cartographer (Planning), the incumbent participates in cartographic drafting, illustrative graphing and the preparation of other visual aides. The incumbent assists in planning and executing the preparation of maps and other depictive items. Responsibility is included for computer system maintenance as it relates to the Geographic Information System (GIS). Supervision may be exercised over technical employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning and
executing the preparation of maps and other depictive items from base maps
and/or sketches;
Assists in creating color
separated thematic maps through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS)
computer software and hardware;
Utilizes computer
graphics equipment, technical drafting equipment and supplies such as film,
technical pens and diazo (blueprint) machine;
Utilizes Geographic
Information System (GIS) computer software to perform statistical analysis;
Assists in the
coordination of cartographic work with printing house requirements;
Makes recommendations
regarding improved cartographic methods and materials;
Uses Arc Macro Language
to automate frequently performed Geographic Information System (GIS) and Local
Area Network tasks;
Performs computer network
systems maintenance tasks as they relate to the Geographic Information System
(GIS);
May assign, supervise and
review the work of personnel involved in the preparation of maps, illustrative
graphing and sketches for publication.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the techniques, terminology, tools and materials
of cartography; thorough knowledge of personal computers, local area networks
and operating systems, and various software applications as they relate to
Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques; good knowledge of the
principles and techniques of computer graphics operations as applied to
mapping; good knowledge of the terminology of planning; good knowledge of paper
grades and binding methods; some knowledge of offset lithography (planographic
method); ability to instruct and supervise technical personnel in such a way as to attain optimum performance results;
ability to transform maps, graphs, sketches and other illustrative materials
produced by planners into finished form for printing; ability to effectively
use Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree in Cartography, Drafting, Design Technology, Civil Engineering, Map
Drafting, Geographic Information Systems Technology or a related field, and two
(2) years of experience working with Geographic Information System technology,
one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma or
graduation from a drafting certificate program at a vocational school or an
accredited institution, and six (6) years of experience working with Geographic
Information Systems technology, one (1) year of which must have been in a
supervisory capacity. Two (2) years of
the above six years experience must have included working with Arc/Info
software including ARCEDIT and ARCPLOT, designing and developing Arc/Info
applications using Arc Marco Language, and utilizing Windows NT and UNIX
operating systems; or,
c) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
