DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class administers a comprehensive criminal justice program. The work involves the professional analysis and compilation of data on criminal justice services and the implementation of agency policy. The incumbent supervises and coordinates the work of a professional and technical staff. Supervision is received from an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.         

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises the development, coordination and implementation of a comprehensive criminal justice program;

            Directs the compilation and analysis of criminal justice services data;

            Supervises and coordinates the work of a professional and technical staff;

            Coordinates the planning and developing of criminal justice programs with related federal, state and local agencies;

            Advises and supervises the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council staff;

            Directs and supervises the development of a management information and referral system;

            Maintains effective cooperative working relationships with civic leaders, department heads and public officials.          

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of planning and implementing criminal justice programs; comprehensive knowledge of the methods and the techniques of data compilation and analysis; comprehensive knowledge of effective research methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of public administration; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic leaders, department heads and public officials; ability to supervise and coordinate the work of a professional and technical staff; ability to administer a program and implement policy decisions; ability to synthesize and interpret data, and write clear and accurate reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.    

           

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and eight (8) years of experience in social planning or development, three (3) years of which must have been in criminal justice services.

 

NOTE: Additional graduate education will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of five (5) years.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Principal Planner (Criminal Justice).
