DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Bureau, an employee in
this class is responsible for the overall coordination of activities and
support services of various functioning units of the Runaway Youth Program
throughout Suffolk County. The position
in this class differs from other Social Service positions in that this position
is specifically for the coordination of the Runaway Youth Program. The incumbent exercises a considerable
amount of independent judgement and initiative in the performance of the
required work, which is reviewed by an administrative superior through the
submission of written reports and conferences.
Does related work as required.
Coordinates activities
interdepartmentally between Youth Bureaus, The Department of Social
Services, The Police Department, County departments and private agencies;
Coordinates and
monitors the program operations of agencies participating in the runaway
and homeless youth services project in
cooperation with Town Youth Bureaus;
Assures that inquiries
concerning available shelter space, transportation, and services can be
responded to 24 hours a day, and maintains current information
regarding operational
programs, available beds, etc.;
Coordinates
interdepartmental studies and preparation of reports, concerning organization,
policy, Procedures, for the purpose of
revision, information, updating and improvement of the
overall program.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of
coordinating a county-wide youth program; thorough knowledge of the range and
quality of services available to runaway and homeless youth in Suffolk County;
good knowledge of the causative factors which precipitate children and youth
running away or being “throwaways”; good knowledge of Federal and State
Programs available to the related areas of this program which could be
engendered and used as a useful supplemental resource; ability to secure broad
community support in cooperation with local and municipal Youth Bureaus from
private and public sectors to develop and coordinate county-wide services for
runaway and homeless youth; ability to work cooperatively with the personnel of
other agencies in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either
(A) Graduation from a
New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s
Degree and two years of experience in adolescent social work; or,
(B) Graduation from
High School or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six years of
experience in adolescent social work; or,
(C) An equivalent
combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
