DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is assigned relatively simple technical tasks relating to traffic engineering studies and design.  Specific work assignments received are usually accompanied by detailed written or oral instructions.  Employees have more responsibility for work methods and greater opportunity to use independent judgment and traffic engineering skills as experience is gained.  Minor supervision is occasionally exercised over Engineering Aides.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in conducting field studies of traffic volume, speed, effectiveness of signals, lighting conditions and other factors affecting traffic safety; 

          Observes and reports on adequacy of signs, pavement markings and width of roadways; 

          Assists in the installation of traffic counting and other measuring devices; 

          Assists in preparation of visual aids such as diagrams, maps, charts and graphs; 

          Performs mathematical computations for the utilization of data; 

          Assists in the layout of traffic control devices; 

          May conduct routine inspections of installation of traffic control devices. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of radar equipment, timing equipment, counting devices and other traffic recording equipment; some knowledge of the theory of traffic and transportation planning; some knowledge of the techniques used in field surveys and the translation of gathered data into the form of diagrams, maps, charts and graphs; ability to make mathematical computations; ability to use drafting instruments; ability to understand and carry out directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of sub-professional experience in traffic engineering, highway planning, transportation planning or the administration of traffic safety programs. 

 

NOTE:  Relevant additional education will be substituted for the one (1) year of sub-professional experience.
