DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of complex technical assignments relating to traffic engineering studies and design. Assignments are received orally and in writing and are general in nature, affording independent judgment.  Supervision is exercised over sub-professional personnel.  Work is subject to review in process and upon completion by traffic engineering personnel.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Conducts complex field studies of traffic volume, speed, effectiveness of signals, lighting conditions and other factors affecting traffic safety; 

            Reports on adequacy of signs, pavement markings and width of roadways; 

            Assists in the preparation of routine contract plans and specifications for traffic control markers; 

            Prepares estimates & submits recommendations on amount of money due contractor each month;

            Supervises Traffic Technician Is and Traffic Technicians II in the inspection and installation of traffic counters; 

            Supervises the inspection and layout of the installation of traffic control devices; 

            Prepares plans, diagrams, maps, charts and graphs; 

            Performs mathematical computations for the utilization of data. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of equipment used for traffic counting and speed measurement; thorough knowledge of the theory of traffic and transportation planning; thorough knowledge of the techniques used in field surveys and the translation of gathered data into the form of diagrams, maps, charts and graphs; ability to make mathematical computations; ability to use drafting instruments; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to plan and supervise the work of a sub-professional and technical staff in a manner conducive to high morale and efficiency; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of sub-professional experience in the field of traffic engineering, highway planning, transportation planning or the administration of traffic safety programs. 

 

NOTE:  Relevant additional education will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. 

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Traffic Technician II.
