DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class receives assignments requiring the application of traffic engineering skills and knowledge on various projects. Assignments are received with general instruction, but incumbents are expected to use initiative and judgment in completing them. Supervision may be exercised over technical assistants in any phase of their assigned duties, and work is checked and reviewed frequently throughout its progress and at its conclusion by a technical supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
the work of a technical staff in collecting traffic information, such as
traffic volumes, radar survey data and traffic accident information;
Assists in conducting
traffic engineering studies and surveys;
Assists in the
preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for the installation of
traffic control devices;
Inspects the installation
of traffic signals.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of the principles of traffic engineering; good knowledge of the
techniques and interpretation of statistical studies of traffic accidents and
projected traffic loads; good knowledge of highway design, as related to
traffic safety and flow; good knowledge of mathematics and its application to
traffic engineering problems; ability to draw sketches and construct charts,
maps and other engineering illustrations; ability to supervise the work of
staff members in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a
Degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field; or,
(b) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Engineering and one (1) year of experience in the field of traffic engineering, highway planning, transportation planning or the administration of traffic safety programs: or,
(c)
Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university
with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation
Planning, or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in the field of
traffic engineering, highway planning, transportation planning or the
administration of traffic safety programs; or,
(d) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and six (6) years of experience in the field of traffic engineering, highway
planning, transportation planning or the administration of traffic safety
programs; or,
(e) An equivalent
combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b),
(c) and (d).
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Traffic Technician II; or,
One (1) year of permanent
competitive status as a Traffic Technician III.
