DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs responsible administrative work in planning and implementing a transportation program for the Senior Citizens within a municipality.  The incumbent analyzes, reviews, plans and coordinates programs and services in order to provide efficient transportation to the Senior Citizens who have a critical need for these services.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Citizens Program Director or other administrative supervisor.  Supervision may be exercised over numerous personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

         Plans and implements a transportation program for the Senior Citizens within a municipality;

         Analyzes, reviews, plans and coordinates programs and services in order to provide efficient transportation to the Senior Citizens;

         Prepares a daily schedule of mini-bus routes;

         Acts as liaison between Senior Citizens and providers of services;

         Coordinates transportation services for Senior Citizens to physicians, Senior Citizen centers, to and from rehabilitation programs, food shopping, delivery of meals to the homebound, etc;

         Evaluates the effectiveness of the program, and recommends changes and/or additions;

         May prepare and administer a budget for the transportation program.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of transportation planning; thorough knowledge of  transportation program administration; thorough knowledge of the laws and safety regulations covering the operation of minibuses; good knowledge of programs and services available to the elderly; some knowledge of geriatric psychology and the physical capacities of Senior Citizens; ability to plan and establish programs which are effective and helpful to Senior Citizens;   ability to keep accurate records and write periodic reports; capacity for compassion in dealing with the unique and constant needs of Senior Citizens and their families; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

         OPEN COMPETITIVE

         Either:

         a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and two (2) years of experience in transportation planning or transportation administration, one year which must have been in the area of Senior Citizens' services; or,

        

         b)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college a university with an Associates Degree, and four (4) years of experience in transportation planning or transportation administration, one year which must have been in the area of Senior Citizens' services; or,

        

         c)  An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
