DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class applies professional and technical knowledge to projects in the area of transportation research and planning. Work involves data collection, data analysis and summarizing studies in report form. The work may involve supervision of Planners and other staff personnel. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor through conferences and reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Performs research studies in the development of transportation facilities for the County or other municipality;

            Collects and analyzes transportation data;

            Prepares preliminary reports and summaries based upon the analysis of collected data;

            May supervise the work of technical and/or clerical staff personnel;

            May make recommendations to supervisors based upon observations made during research studies.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation planning; thorough knowledge of the methods of data collection and statistical analysis; good knowledge of research methods in transportation research; ability to supervise the work of a technical and/or clerical staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to analyze data and write reports; good judgment; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either;

            a) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Master's Degree in Transportation Planning and one (1) of year experience in transportation planning; or,

            b) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Master's Degree and two (2) years of experience in transportation planning; or,

            c) Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree and four (4) years of experience in transportation planning.

          

NOTE:  Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Planner (Transportation).
