DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for conducting training courses for bus drivers, administering written and performance testing of bus drivers, and other duties requiring specialized certification.  Work other than this is similar to that performed by Bus Transportation Technicians including the collection and analysis of data relating to the development and implementation of a bus transportation program.  Written and oral reports are reviewed by administrative supervisors for compliance with direction and application of technical principles to work situations.  May supervise clerical personnel.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Conducts basic, advanced, refresher and other specialized training programs for bus drivers;      

            Conducts training for and also performs fingerprinting and bus driver file audits;

            Conducts training for and performs defensive driving observations and driver abstract interviews;

            Conducts training for and performs road testing and written testing;

            Documents and resolves problems, issues and complaints from districts, parents, schools and contractors;

            Follows through on disciplinary and/or recommended corrective action from Regional Transportation Program, Special Education and/or district and school administration personnel;

            Conducts long range and short-term ridership surveys;

            Recommends place of origin and destination of routes based on data collected;

            Develops schedules and recommends frequency of service required to serve projected ridership;

            Prepares maps and visual aids for public relations and promotional pro­grams;

            Establishes liaisons with civic groups and the general public to promote public awareness of the bus transportation program;

            Assists in the implementation of the program by reviewing bus schedules, operator's drivers logs, maintenance reports for equipment and field checks of operations for schedule conformance;

            May supervise clerical personnel.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and inspection practices, pro­cedures and policies governing bus transportation; thorough knowledge of training procedures; thorough knowledge of New York State motor vehicle laws, New York State Department of Transportation laws and all relevant laws and regulations governing bus transportation; good knowledge of the geography and roads of the County; ability to collect and synthesize data and prepare oral and written reports; ability to prepare bus route maps and other visual aids for public dissemination and promotion; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with the public, bus operators and other employees; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience in the coordination of the operations of a bus transportation system.  Must also possess a Motor Vehicles 19A Examiners certificate issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles and a School Bus Driver Instructor certificate issued by NYS Department of Education.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment, employees must possess the appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.  The type of license required will be determined by the appointing authority with respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.  License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
