DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in the development, operation and monitoring of the County's public transit program. The work involves the implementation of Suffolk County's program for bus transportation. The incumbent assists in the planning of new and revised bus routes. Work includes laying out routes and developing schedules, handling passenger complaints, and assuring contractor compliance with contractual obligations. Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Regularly visits bus
companies under contract to County and service operations in the field to check
on equipment and all aspects of contract requirements;
Plans means of improving
routing efficiency and improving utilization of vehicles.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and inspection
practices; procedures and policies governing transportation programs; thorough
knowledge of the geography of the County and of federal and state laws and
safety regulations covering the operation of buses; thorough knowledge of the
scope of the county's responsibility in the field of transportation; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and the
general public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally
and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a New
York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
Degree, and three (3) years of experience in planning, monitoring or scheduling
bus transportation; or,
b) Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and seven (7) years of experience in planning, monitoring or scheduling bus transportation.
