TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR 1645
An employee in this class is responsible for managing the
day-to-day operations of public transit and paratransit programs within a
municipality, exclusive of bus maintenance activities. Work involves the training, supervision and
scheduling of drivers, dispatchers and office staff. Duties require the exercise of independent
judgment. Work is performed under the
general direction of an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Ensures
compliance with relevant bus driver qualification requirements, including
licensure, driving record, driver training, medical readiness and physical condition;
Documents
observation of driver readiness, sends drivers for drug test upon reasonable
suspicion;
Schedules
the work of all bus drivers and assigns substitutes as needed to cover routes;
Makes
field checks of drivers to assure schedule compliance;
May test drivers annually as mandated
by state law and perform other responsibilities required of a NYS 19-A
Certified Examiner;
Responds
to emergency conditions by making appropriate schedule changes or suspensions
of service;
Approves
payroll sheets and keeps ridership and revenue statistics;
Responds
to questions and complaints from the general public, in person, by telephone or
in writing.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of accepted and recognized principles
of management; thorough knowledge of motor vehicle laws pertaining to buses and
bus drivers; thorough knowledge of the geography, roads and traffic conditions
of the municipality; thorough knowledge of the operation, procedures and
policies governing public bus transportation; ability to keep accurate
statistical records; ability to deal effectively with the general public;
ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and three (3) years of managerial experience in public transportation.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates
must obtain a valid CDL-B license, with passenger and air brake endorsements,
within the first 26 weeks of employment. This license must be maintained throughout
employment in this title.
Depending
upon assignment, may be required to obtain certification through the New York
State Department of Motor Vehicles as a 19-A Certified Examiner to test drivers
under the applicable provisions of New York State Vehicle Traffic Law. If required, certification must be maintained
throughout employment in this title.
