DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in the management of day-to-day operations of public transit and paratransist programs within a municipality, exclusive of bus maintenance activities. Work involves assisting the Public Transportation Operations Supervisor in the training, scheduling and supervision of drivers, dispatchers and office staff. Duties require the exercise of independent judgment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Public Transportation Operations Supervisor. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

May assess driver readiness, document observations, and report findings to supervisor;

Assists in developing work schedules for bus drivers and the assignment of substitutes as needed to cover routes;

Develops paratransit bus routes according to passenger request;

May make field checks of drivers to assure schedule compliance;

May drive bus route on emergency basis;

May supervise the removal of fareboxes; may collect, count and store cash;

May respond to emergency conditions by making appropriate schedule changes or suspensions of service;

Investigates accidents, photographs scene and prepares report for supervisor’s signature;

Reviews payroll sheets and keeps ridership and revenue statistics;

Responds to questions and complaints from the general public by telephone or in writing;

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of accepted and recognized principles of supervision; good knowledge of motor vehicle laws pertaining to buses and bus drivers; good knowledge of the geography, roads and traffic conditions of the municipality; good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and inspection practices, procedures and policies governing public bus transportation; ability to keep accurate statistical records; ability to deal effectively with the general public; ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

OPEN COMPETITIVE

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of supervisory experience in a public transportation system.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

At the time of appointment and during employment, employee will be required to posses the appropriate driver’s license with respect to the vehicles being operated.
